Citing Sources in Classics and Archaeology

This page will give you some tips for citing sources relevant to Classics.  Please also consult the Classics Department's Style Guide.

For more information about Citing & Referencing, visit the general library guide.

Citing Ancient Texts

Cite classical texts in the following format:

[Author], [Title] [Book/Section. (Poem, if applicable)].[Line #s cited]

note:

  • you may omit the name of the work, if the author only wrote one work (e.g. Herodotus 9.1 and not Herodotus, Histories 9.1)
  • you may use a standard abbreviation for author/text - check an authoritative source, such as The Oxford Classical Dictionary

Verse Example

Homer, Iliad 18.141-143.

Prose Example

Plato, Symposium 215a3-218b7.
