User Experience (UX) Working Group

Summary

This project collected data on how frequently patrons use desktop computers in the Library and Learning Commons, what purposes they use them for, and why they prefer particular computer lab locations on campus. To do this, we conducted an online survey which received 151 responses and conducted 14 unobtrusive observation sweeps of the main floor of the Library and Learning Commons.

A few key findings and representative survey comments are included in this summary. Full data and analysis by topic is available in the following report.

  • Laptop ownership is almost universal (95%). However, a significant portion of users (>56%) use Library desktop computers because they do not bring their laptop to campus.
  • 66% of respondents use Library desktop computers at least once per week. 24% use them daily.
  • 43.5% of respondents would prefer to have more desktop computers in the Library and Learning Commons. 39.5% have no preference. 15% prefer the same number. 2% would prefer fewer.
  • Users frequently sit at computers and use the desk space, but not the computer itself. 14% of observed users fell into this category.
  • 48.7% of users prefer the Library computers when they use a desktop computer on campus, compared to 18% who prefer another location. Location and environment/ambiance were the main factors affecting preference.
