A research guide to help you find books, articles and other resources on topics in Teacher Education.

Indigenous Education

Welcome to the research guide for Indigenous education. Use this guide to find materials on Indigenous worldviews, experiences and knowledges for teaching in the K-12 classroom.

Finding books

Finding materials about Indigenous education can be challenging due to inconsistencies in the language used to describe and catalogue books and articles. You will see terms such as Indigenous, Aboriginal, and First Nations, as well as outdated colonial language used to describe literature from various historical and cultural contexts. Use a range of terms when searching to see how these search terms produces different results (adapted from https://libguides.lib.umanitoba.ca/education/indigenous-education).

We acknowledge some catalogue records contain offensive or discriminatory language. Please see our plan to address problematic language in Omni catalogue records.

When searching for books or articles on Indigenous topics, consider the terminology:

  • First Nations, aboriginal, Indians, Native American, Native Canadian, indigenous, etc.
    • try a search like: (first nation* OR aboriginal OR indian* OR indigenous)
  • Use truncation in your search:
    • e.g. native* will find native, natives, etc.
    • e.g. canad* will find canada, canadian, etc.
