Finding Data & Statistics

Sources and support for finding and using numerical, spatial, and statistical data.

Canadian Data Portals

Members of the Brock community have several options for accessing Statistics Canada content. There's a lot of overlap across the different portals listed below — all of them include Census data, for example — but they also each offer some specialized content or functions as well as different user interfaces. If you're unsure where to begin or have trouble finding what you need, please contact the Data Librarian for help

Lunaris

  • A single portal for a lot of Canadian data
  • Covers academic researchers, government at all levels, and more
  • Was created to be a single, comprehensive place to find Canadian open data, is not easy to analyze/ visualize/ explore on this platform (Odesi and CHASS are better for this)
  • Keyword and map-based searching (i.e. search by selecting a map area)
  • See the user guide for more detailed practical info

Statistics Canada website

  • We recommend using the website Data Tab as a starting point for finding microdata/ tables - note the results tabs (top) and filters (left)
  • Tables that you find using the Data Tab can be customized - find out more here
  • Note: Stat Can produces a lot of rich analysis: check out Analytical reports by StatCan staff
  • Note: as a researcher affiliated with an institution, you may have access to more data than you can discover on the open portal. The below three sources (Odesi, CHASS and Scholar's Geoportal) give you extended access to Stat Can data, because you are affiliated with Brock.

Odesi

  • Collection datasets from:
    • Statistics Canada (additional to those open to public - exclusive to researchers)
    • Canadian Public Opinion Polls - Gallup, IPSOS, Leger, Angus Reid and more
    • Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
    • The National Topographic System (NTS) map series*
    • Library and historical data rescue projects
  • Interface allows you to explore:
    • Explore variables by groups
    • Get summary frequencies/ statistics
    • Subsetting by variable
    • Build cross-tabulations
  • Allows you to download your subset of interest instead of entire dataset (useful for reducing data cleaning)
  • Can download in a variety of formats
  • See the Odesi user guide here

CHASS

  • Data portal including Census (Canadian Census Analyser) and other StatCan surveys (CANSIM), as well as data from other sources
  • Similar content to Odesi but with different interface for accessing data
  • Especially useful for downloading Census data by census tract or dissemination area
  • Can download in a variety of formats
  • See these step-by-step tutorials

Scholars GeoPortal

  • Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL)/Scholars Portal
  • Geospatial data portal for data from StatCan and other sources
  • Map-based interface to explore, subset, and download in a variety of formats
  • Find out more through the Map, Data & GIS Library
  • See this step-by-step tutorial
