Getting Your Research Out

A guide to help you increase the impact of your research.

Depositing an Open Access Version of Your Publications

Did you publish your research traditionally? You can still deposit an edition of your work utilizing open access to increase the reach of your research! This particular type of open access publishing is considered green open access.

Versions of Your Publications

It is important to understand the differences in the versions of your publications as your publisher's policies will vary depending on the print edition. Read the section below to better understand the range of versions of your work and follow the instructions for Jisc to get your publisher's policies.

Preprint (Submitted)

  • The version of your work before the peer review process
  • This can be the edition you originally submitted to your publisher

Postprint (Accepted)

  • The accepted version of your article which may include some edits that your preprint does not include
  • This is the edition that has undergone peer review and will reflect those changes

Published

  • Can also be referred to as a postprint edition of your work
  • This version of your publication will include the formatting and branding unique to your journal

You will need to check with your publisher's conditions before choosing which version you would want to deposit with open access. The following section will show you a platform called Jisc that can help identify what your publisher permits for depositing open access.

Identify Your Publisher's Open Access Policies

Jisc's Open Policy Finder is a resource available to you that will allow you to identify what your publisher's policies are regarding publishing a version of your article with open access.

Use the Jisc website to search find your publisher and their policies.

Find Your Journal with Open Policy Finder

  1. Enter in the name of your journal
  2. Select your journal from the results and select which version of your article you would like to check
    • Using your postprint or 'accepted' version is recommended, when it is possible, as that will be the edition of your article that is closest to the published version
  3. If, as an example, you selected 'accepted' as the version you want to deposit, you can click the drop down to see what the publisher's policy is on self-archiving a copy of your work to an institutional repository, making it open access
    • Remember that many publishers will have an 'embargo' period which will prevent you from depositing in the institutional repository for a set amount of time, usually 12 months

This example shows the policies associated with the journal: Journal of Education for Library and Information Science

Brock University Digital Repository

You can deposit your research in the Brock University Digital Repository. There are three options for depositing in the digital repository:

  1. Self-deposit your work in the archive and follow the instructions
  2. Utilize the Help with Depositing section below on this webpage
    • Once you enter in your DOI, Share Your Paper will tell you if you can freely share your work
    • Enter your Brock email and add your work as a file specified by Share Your Paper for it to be deposited in the repository
  3. Students Depositing a Thesis or Major Research Project
    • Check with the Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs Department regarding the requirements to deposit a major research project or thesis to Brock's Digital Repository.

Help with Depositing
