Building Your ORCID

If you have previous work published prior to creating an ORCID iD, the following steps will help you import that work to be connected to your ORCID iD.

You have several methods available when adding previously published works to ORCID

  • Import Using Search & Link
  • Add with your DOI or PubMed ID
  • Add Publications Manually

Import Using Search & Link

You can import your previous work from other databases such as Crossref Metadata search, Scopus, or DataCite

Crossref

  1. On the homepage of your ORCID account click, the 'add works' button and select 'search & link' from the drop down menu
  2. There will then be a list of databases you can select such as Crossref Metadata Search
  3. Once you have selected Crossref, check off the permissions request and press the 'authorize' button
  4. You can then select a work you have published, as the website will populate works with your name, and select the 'Add to ORCID' button and the 'Yes' confirmation button
  5. Your work will now be populated in your ORCID account

Scopus

  1. On your ORCID account, click the 'add works' button and select 'search & link' from the drop down menu
  2. Select the 'Scopus to ORCID' option from the drop down menu
  3. Review the information and ensure your publication record is correct, and then you will be able to integrate your work into ORCID

Add with Your DOI or PubMed ID

If you are unable to import your work using the Search & Link option, you can add your research through the DOI. These instructions can also be used for a PubMed ID.

  1. On the works section of your ORCID homepage, select the 'add works' button and then choose 'add DOI' or 'add PubMed ID'
  2. Enter in the DOI or PubMed ID of your work
  3. A form will display on the website with some of the information pre-populated based on the DOI/PubMed ID. You can edit anything or manually add additional information at this stage
  4. Select what your preferred visibility setting is, 'Everyone' is recommended
  5. Press the 'add this work to your ORCID record' button

Add Publications Manually

  1. On your ORCID account click the 'add works' button and select 'search & link' from the drop down menu
  2. Select the 'add manually' button
  3. Fill out as much information in the fields as possible. The work identifier is highly recommended for the ORCID system to check. This can be ISBN, DOI or URL.
  4. Once you have entered in your information, set the visibility settings and select the 'save changes' button
